The debut album from Howlin' Wolf was actually a compilation of previously issued singles by Chess Records. It features "Moanin' At Midnight" and "How Many More Years", recorded at Sam Phillips' Memphis recording Service in July 1951.

The album was given a W.C. Handy Award in 1987 for "Vintage/Reissue Album (U.S.)". Rolling Stone magazine ranked the album at #154 on their list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
