TAS Super LP List! Special Merit: Informal
Interpol's Hit Debut Album on Vinyl LP!
In 2002, Interpol's debut album seized the imagination of a generation. The spare, lean textures, darkly oblique lyrics and suave stage presence were entirely different from the bands who preceded them on the charts and the radio. The album was relesed to a great deal of critical acclaim and sold exceptionally well for an indie release. It also ranked highly on the yearly lists of many rock critics.
Musically, many have pointed out the similarities between Turn on the Bright Lights and the 1970s group Joy Division. Both groups make heavy use of drums, often as the lead instrument in a song, and the lead singer of Interpol, Paul Banks, has a somewhat similar voice in tone to that of Joy Division's Ian Curtis.
"...there's no getting around that Turn On the Bright Lights is an incredibly powerful and affecting album." -Eric Carr, Pitchfork
