James Cameron & James Horner team up again for this powerful soundtrack. Building on their success together with the movies Aliens & Titanic, Avatar went on to become the highest grossing film of all time! Features I See You by Leona Lewis!
For Avatar, James Cameron (Titanic, Aliens, The Terminator) hired long-time collaborator, James Horner, to provide the musical character for his sci-fi fantasy film. The music had to match the images with its own power to transport us to a world of powerful emotions. It had to reach deep into our hearts, to allow us not only to see but to feel. The music is our key to the emotional understanding of this film.
James Horner knew when he took on the scoring of Avatar that it would be the challenge of a lifetime. The music is both classic in its orchestral power, but also connects us to the soul of the Na'vi through the use of indigenous rhythms and vocals. James Horner went to the extent of collaborating with ethnomusicologist Wanda Bryant in order to bring the Na'vi alien culture to life.
During the theatrical run, the film broke several box office records and became the highest-grossing film of all time, surpassing Titanic (also directed by James Cameron), which had held those records for twelve years! Avatar was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and won three, for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects.
"How could we create an alien music without alienating film audiences?... Horner asked me to find unusual musical sounds that 'no one has heard before,'... Because we could not use recognizable musical elements from any one earth culture, we created a library of musical elements for the Navi from a conglomeration of non-western sounds and styles. Horner, a western composer, listened to non-western sounds and then wrote music that was based on the cultures imagined musical profile... By blending musical devices and stylistic characteristics from various earth cultures, James Horner and I created a score which complements the beauty of Camerons visuals, instills emotion and pulls out the love story, and narrates this huge epic." - Dr. Wanda Bryant, Ethnomusicologist (CalArts & Pasadena City College)
"...[A]n admirably counter-intuitive approach, with the earliest cues on this set notable for their restraint. Pure Spirits of the Forest threatens to break into a sweat, but its percussive punch is short-lived, much of its run time consumed by starry twinkles and strange whistles. It, like several pieces here, also exhibits string elements familiar to fans of Celtic music something thats become a Horner trademark... Such are its nuances that it necessitates a detailed listen, and that one will only lead to further explorations as every subtlety is sought out for enjoyment." - Mike Diver, BBC
"...[T]he overall feel of the score owes... to Ennio Morricone's iconic work on the Mission, utilizing an atmospheric blend of native drums and choirs with lush, traditional adventure orchestration." - James Christopher Monger, AllMusic
The Theme song for Avatar, "I See You", was written by both James Horner and Kuk Harrell and produced by Simon Franglen. This marks the second time that James Horner and Simon Franglen have collaborated on a theme song for a film directed by James Cameron, the first one being "My Heart Will Go On", sung by Celine Dion and used for his 1997 classic Titanic.
