TREASURE FOUND.

Anyone who owns the original Jazz at the Pawnshop, considered one of the most famous audiophile albums in music, will not be able to resist this companion album which captures the enduring spirit of the intimate Pawnshop jazz club in Stockholm. It's called Late Night because these previously unreleased songs were played during the last two sets late at night. The treasured 40-year-old tapes were discovered accidentally and found to be in excellent condition; a week was spent editing and mastering them in high resolution for this album, which includes musical tags to indicate the end of a set and uses slow fade-outs and fade-ins to identify the breaks. You can hear the band members walk back on stage, pick up their instruments and get into the final sets on this electrifying recording that brings together musicianship and engineering in a magical symbiosis.

WHY LATE NIGHT?

At the end of the evening, before packing their instruments to go home, jazz musicians often will play a set for themselves. These tapes hold the recording of such a moment, as the famous Jazz at the Pawnshop group play with longer solos, leaving themselves more liberty to spontaneously explore the many jazz possibilities of the songs, and having fun. These discovered recordings were mastered by 2xHD's René Laflamme and released under the appropriate title

LATE NIGHT.

A special moment when musicians play for their own pleasure.

Based in Montreal and created by audiophile sound engineer René Laflamme and producer André Perry, all 2xHD Tapes are from the original analog master and transfer in analog domain using a Nagra-T tape recorder, modified with high-end tube playback electronics, wired from the playback head. In the high-end audio world, René has carved out a reputation for definition of excellence and uses his knowledge and unfailing instinct to match various audio components to create the best all-encompassing sound experience.

For the recording on this tape, the original 1/4" 15 ips NAB or CCIR master tapes were played on a Nagra-T tape recorder, modified wtih high-end tube playback electronics, wired with OCC silver cable from the playback head direct to a Nick Doshi tube head preamplifier. The Nagra T, with its four direct drive motors, two pinch rollers and a tape tension head, is one of the best transports ever made. A custom-built carbon fiber head block and a head damping electronic system permit 2xHD FUSION to obtain more transparency and better 3D imaging. This copy was recorded on a Nagra IV-S 1/4" at 15 ips.

** It is standard practice in all recording studios to keep the tape "tail out." This reduces "pre-echo" and it means that the tape should be placed on the right hand side of the recorder, re-wound and then played.

2023 was a bumper year for Jazz at the Pawnshop reissues headlined by four 15-ips reel-to-reel tapes and two LP reissues. The best sounding release of the trio of tapes is hands down Late Night closely followed by Jazz at the Pawnshop 2 and the album that started it all, Jazz at the Pawnshop. Late Night consists of seven previously unreleased songs originating from as described by 2XHD, '…the end of the evening, before packing their instruments to go home, jazz musicians often will play a set for themselves. These tapes hold the recording of such a moment…' The sound on this tape is extraordinary and the band's longer solos really allow the music to develop. The track that stands out here is 'Gubben Och Kallingen (Alternative Take)-Traditional.'
