3LP Box Set Including 4-page Booklet! First Time Available On Vinyl!!
Available for the first time ever on vinyl, the complete recordings of John Coltrane's historic and hotly contested live performances at the Village Vanguard on the nights of 1-2 November 1961 with a 4-page booklet! This historic LP was not only Coltrane's first live album (and his first recording to feature the complete line-up of his now legendary quartet featuring McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones and Jimmy Garrison), but it was also, at the time, one of the most criticized residencies in the history of jazz.
In November 1961, these performances (also featuring Eric Dolphy) represented jazz music's supreme cutting edge - with Coltrane beginning to experiment with Eastern music, represented in numbers like India and instruments like the oud - but it was one that critics were largely unwilling to embrace. In fact, they began filling newspapers with vehement anti-Coltrane sentiment, and some even went so far as to call him the downfall of jazz!
