Hearing Keith Richards sing lead vocals is an acquired taste. It's only rock & roll, and either you like it or you don't. Regardless, Keef knows how to assemble one helluva band, as evidenced by the scruffy X-Pensive Winos collective backing him up on this energetic live album recorded at the Hollywood Palladium on December 15, 1988 during his first-ever solo tour. Initially released on CD in 1991, Palladium has been upgraded, reloaded, and remastered for multi-format consumption, but its three bonus tracks are only available digitally and on 10-inch vinyl in the Super Deluxe box set. 'You Don't Move Me,' Richards' alleged disdain for a certain particular frontman, holds much sway with Steve Jordan's whipcrack snare-drum hits and Ivan Neville's supple keyboard accents. The Rolling Stones' decidedly non-P.C. 1981 ditty 'Little T&A' deflty melds Richards' riff-slab guitar style with that of Waddy Wachtel, his across-the-pond Ronnie Wood counterpart and/or the American equivalent of being the Swiss Army knife of guitarists, while a cover of the 1963 Lennon/McCartney-penned Stones hit 'I Wanna Be Your Man' is as ragtag fab as it gets. Pouring this troika of boss tracks into the original Palladium mix proves X-Pensive Winos only get better with age.
