Kishi Bashi is an American singer, violinist, and songwriter celebrated for his inventive approach to music. He blends elements of indie pop, electronica, and classical techniques into his compositions. Notably, he uses loop pedals to build intricate soundscapes live on stage. His music is known for its joyful tone and lush orchestration, as heard in albums like 151a and Sonderlust. Prior to his solo career, he was a founding member of the band Jupiter One and has also toured with of Montreal.
This collaboration between Kishi Bashi and the Atlantic String Quartet represents a perfect marriage of experimental pop and classical sensibilities. Recorded live at Studio47, the album captures the spontaneous energy and delicate interplay between Kishi Bashi's looping techniques and the quartet's lush string arrangements. The result is a transcendent sonic experience that defies easy categorization.
Experience Kishi Bashi on two 10.5 inch reels as though he was in your living room. Sourced from the live recording Master Tape at Studio47 on May 15, 2024.
Stella Records is a recording company founded in 2000 by Marco Stella and Ryan O'Connor of Reel To Reel Haven, with the mission of bringing the best possible recorded source material to everyone's house. Best is of course subjective, but for them, the ingredients you need to aspire to be the Best are not.
From Mic to 1/4 Inch 1st Generation Master Tape Copy
The recording process is 100% analog, maintaining the original wave form from microphone to your very own ¼ inch master tape copy.
Traveling from the mics through a SSL AWS 924 Delta console, to the 2 inch Otari MX-80, the signal never touches a digital interface.
The original recording is then mastered to a ½ inch 2 track Otari MTR-10 with brand new heads (combination of original unused Otari & Flux Magnetics).
From there, ¼ master tape copies are produced on one of several Studer and Otari ¼ mastering tape recorders.
** It is standard practice in all recording studios to keep the tape "tail out". This reduces "pre-echo" and it means that the tape should be placed on the right hand side of the recorder, re-wound and then played.
This was quite a revelation to listen to — not only as it introduced me to an artist and other players I'd badly overlooked, but it also offered a 'realness' of recording and boldness of work that is often left by the wayside in pursuit of sonic audiophile 'perfection' in a mastering sense. There is some audible noise floor here and some untamed late reflections, but each one builds up the mental image I have of sitting front row in a large warehouse space (which is what it is) within touching distance of some incredible artists. It's quite unlike anything else I've heard — and I'm richer for it.
