Berlin was Reeds third solo album, in drastic contrast to its predecessor, the glam rock Transformer. The album is a tragic rock opera about a doomed couple that addresses themes of drug use and depression.
Featuring heavy orchestral arrangements and horn sections, Berlin features re-drafts of earlier compositions first penned by Reeds Velvet Underground.
"Reed followed up his breakthrough album, Transformer, with Berlin, which he called "my version of Hamlet." A bleak song cycle about an abusive, drug-fueled relationship, it's hugely ambitious but also one of the gloomiest records ever made slow, druggy and heavily orchestrated by producer Bob Ezrin." - www.rollingstone.com
