Recorded for Roulette on two consecutive days, April 3 and 4, 1961 in New York, Armstrong and Ellington were joined by fellow musicians Barney Bigard, Trummy Young, Mort Herbert and Danny Barcelona for a total of 17 tracks. The companion album, Recording Together For the First Time was released in 1961 followed by The Great Reunion in 1963 with the remaining tracks.
