33 RPM Vinyl Records: The Full-Length LP
33 1/3 RPM is the classic speed of the long-playing record. Since the LP arrived in 1948, it has been the standard way to hear a full album on vinyl: a 12-inch disc spinning at 33 1/3 revolutions per minute, typically holding around 18 to 22 minutes of music per side. Our 33 RPM section is the heart of our vinyl records catalog, with tens of thousands of LPs across jazz, rock and pop, classical, blues, country, soundtracks and more, from new releases to audiophile reissues.
33 1/3 vs. 45 RPM: What's the Difference?
Spinning at 33 1/3 lets a whole album fit on one or two LPs, so you can settle in and listen without getting up every few songs. A 45 RPM pressing moves more groove past the stylus each second, which can bring a little more detail and dynamic ease, especially near the end of a side, but it usually spreads an album across more discs. Both can sound superb. As with record weight, the mastering, cutting and pressing matter far more than the speed alone. Many of our 33s are 180 gram vinyl or 200g heavyweight pressings.
