Old Ways was recorded in Tennessee and Texas in 1985. For years, Neil Young dabbled with various aspects of country-styled music, but, on Old Ways he really turns it up and turns country into PURE Neil Young.

He rounded up some hot country music talent for this recording. Country outlaws Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings play a role on all but three of the tracks, either in duets with Neil or on electric and acoustic guitars. Janis Oliver-Gill and Kristine Oliver-Arnold (the Sweethearts of the Rodeo) and Marty Stuart provide featured back-up. Old Ways was produced by Neil Young, Ben Keith, David Briggs and Elliot Mazer.
