First Album in Over 4 Years! With Guest Artists M. Ward, Steve Turner and members of The New Pornographers, My Morning Jacket, Calexico & Los Lobos!
There's a special challenge to being an artist in this increasingly fractured cultural age; a delicate balancing act, between being of your time, and striving for timelessness. Few contemporary artists even try. Neko Case is an exception.
Anti- releases Neko Case's much anticipated new studio album (and first album in over four years), The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You. The release of first single "Man" has already created a stir, leading to the biggest radio story of her career and raves from Rolling Stone to Pitchfork to NPR, who called "Man" a "bad-ass summer jam." Now fans will get to hear the vaulting ambition and rock swagger that "Man" promises. Neko's most precise, urgent record to date, marked by a melodic immediacy, a loving embrace of the big rock gesture, and a lyrical frankness. The perfect culmination of Neko's trajectory so far: the pop, folk and country influences, the fluid craft of her band, and that soaring voice, blended seamlessly into the album her legions of fans have been waiting for.
The album was executive-produced by Case and recorded at Wavelab in Tuscon, as well as Portland, Los Angeles and with Phil Palazzolo in Brooklyn. Tucker Martine, Case and Darryl Neudorf mixed the album, with backing by guitarist Paul Rigby, bassist Tom V. Ray, vocalist Kelly Hogan and multi-instrumentalist Jon Rauhouse. Other guests include M. Ward, Howe Gelb, Steve Turner of Mudhoney and members of The New Pornographers, My Morning Jacket, Calexico, Los Lobos and Visqueen.
Neko has kept in the public eye with high profile appearances on soundtracks, notably on The Hunger Games, with Nick Cave on True Blood, and on the new Stephen King musical project Ghost Brothers of Darkland County. Nekos gorgeous voice has also led to numerous appearances alongside Andrew Bird, The Dodos,Jakob Dylan, and Peter Wolf, as well as her continued association with the New Pornographers. And her cultural smarts have gained her numerous, non-music spots from guest-hosting on Turner Classic Movies alongside Robert Osborne to competing on NPRs Wait Wait Dont Tell Me. Most recently, Neko gave NPR unprecedented access to her recording process, creating a threepart series on the making of The Worse Things Get that has aired throughout 2013 and will culminate at albums release.
"With 11 original new songs (and one Nico cover), The Worse Things Get is the result of Cases four year 'embarrassing and hilarious march' into her own psyche, a place she describes as a 'brain wilderness more dense and dangerous than I thought.' But after all that, Case says she feels like 'a streamlined being' and the album reflects that. Precise and immediate, The Worse Things Get has... big rock gestures without overshadowing what NPR called 'one of the most memorable and seductive voices in music'. - Shea Corrigan, American Songwriter
"One of the most memorable and seductive voices in music" - NPR
