The singular singer & pianist Patricia Barber last put her distinct stamp on a collection of standards with her acclaimed 2000 release Nightclub. On the heels of Mythologies, her ambitious song cycle based on Greek mythology - Barber delivers The Cole Porter Mix, a stunning celebration of the great Cole Porter's songbook. The Cole Porter Mix is more about the song than how one develops and arrives at an arrangement. Theres no high-arch poetry here, just sumptuous melodies and subtle rhythmic devices. Solo saxophone flights by guest Chris Potter and understated guitar work by longtime Barber foil Neal Alger fill the arrangements with an ideal balance of grit and grace. Factor in Barbers erotic tones, playful humor, and fine piano playing, and this set of pop standards is love at first listen.
But like all great jazz artists, Barber in The Cole Porter Mix has brought her own vision to the music at hand, and in so doing she has reinvented works that we might have thought we already knew.
