Various Artists Pay Tribute to Karen Dalton on 150g Vinyl!
On this release, female vocalists such as Lucinda Williams, Patty Griffin, Marissa Nadler, Isobel Campbell, Sharon Van Etten, and more perform songs by the late folk singer/songwriter Karen Dalton.
Associated with the 1960s Greenwich Village music scene, Karen Dalton (1937-1993) was a folk blues singer and banjo player. She played with Fred Neil and the Holy Modal Rounders as well as Bob Dylan. Her bluesy voice is compared to Billie Holiday oft times though she was more influenced by Bessie Smith.
Karen Dalton recorded two studio albums during her lifetime, neither of which contain any songs she wrote. By the good graces of legendary guitarist Peter Walker, who oversees Karen's Estate, we are gifted with these lost lyrics, now given voice by other great women of song.
Karen Dalton is said to be the subject of the song "Katie's Been Gone" on the album The Basement Tapes by the Band and Bob Dylan. In his Chronicles: Volume One, Bob Dylan said of Dalton, "My favorite singer in the place (Cafe Wha?) was Karen Dalton. Karen had a voice like Billie Holiday's and played the guitar like Jimmy Reed." Fred Neil's appraisal was "All I can say is that she sure can sing the shit out of the blues."
