Cellist Mstislav Rostropovich and pianist Benjamin Britten perform sonatas by Schubert, Shumann & Debussy.
One of the great composers of the nineteenth century, Schumann was the quintessential artist whose life and work embody the idea of Romanticism in music.
Schubert was among the first of the Romantics, and the composer who, more than any other, brought the art song (lied) to artistic maturity. He produced masterpieces in nearly every genre, all characterized by rich harmonies, an expansive treatment of classical forms, and a seemingly endless gift for melody.
Claude Debussy was among the most influential composers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His mature compositions, distinctive and appealing, combined modernism and sensuality so successfully that their sheer beauty often obscures their technical innovation.
