Stokowski conducting the Symphony of the Air performing Beethoven's Symphony No. 7.

Leopold Anthony Stokowski was a British orchestral conductor, well known for his free-hand performing style that spurned the traditional baton and for obtaining a characteristically sumptuous sound from the orchestras he conducted. He conducted the music for and appeared in Disney's Fantasia and was a lifelong champion of contemporary composers, giving many premieres of new music during his 60-year conducting career.

After the NBC Symphony Orchestra was disbanded as the official ensemble of the NBC radio network, it was re-formed as the Symphony of the Air with Stokowski as notional Music Director, and as such performed many concerts and made recordings from 1954 until 1963. The U.S. premiere in 1958 of Turkish composer Adnan Saygun's Yunus Emre Oratorio is among them. He made a series of Symphony of the Air recordings for the United Artists label in 1958 which included Beethoven's 7th Symphony.

"Stokowski gave the orchestra an entirely new sound, popularly known as the 'Philadelphia Sound' or the 'Stokowski Sound.' Its foundation was a luxuriant, sonorous tone and an exacting attention to color. He pioneered the use of 'free' bowing, which produced a rich, homogenized string tone... One of the first modern conductors to give up the use of the baton, Stokowski employed graceful, almost hypnotic, hand gestures to work his magic. Indeed, Stokowski was the first conductor to become a true superstar. He was regarded as something of a matinee idol, an image aided by his appearances in such films as the Deanna Durbin spectacle One Hundred Men and a Girl (1937) and, most famously, as the flesh-and-blood leader of the Philadelphia Orchestra in Walt Disney's animated classic Fantasia (1940)." - All Music Guide

Recorded 17 December 1958, Carnegie Hall, New York.

A Blu-spec CD can be played on all CD players and does not require a blue laser to be read.

Blu-spec CD, which uses the same Blu Laser Diode as Blu-ray high-quality CD eliminated jitter by accurate pit mold.

Blu Laser Diode (Laser Diode) Cutting: The wavelength of BLD is 405nm compared with 458nm of former mastering machine. This short wavelength allows more precise microfabrication. Sony used the optimized optical fiber to improve the beam quality of BLD. The gas laser uses cooling fan which generates small vibration, however, BLD completely eliminates the vibration since cooling fan is unnecessary. These solutions reduced the cause of jitter such as error of width, length, placement of pit. BLD is able to realize the accurate master disc as the master tape.
