This album was Sun Ra's first, originally released in 1957 on Transition Records as Jazz by Sun Ra. Includes Sun Ra's original notes and poetry, such as "Explanation of Compositions," "The Techniques I Employ," and "Instructions to the Peoples of Earth." Tracks include "Brainville," "Call For All Demons," and "Transition."

To create the production master for this product the original analog master tapes were played on an optimized Otari MTR10 and copied to a newly refurbished Ampex ATR 102 using RMGI SM-900 tape stock. Subsequent copies were made on more Otari MTR10s using SM-911 tape stock. Recorded at 7.5ips on one seven-inch reel housed in a cardboard box with UV-coated cover art and liner information.

** It is standard practice in all recording studios to keep the tape "tail out". This reduces "pre-echo" and it means that the tape should be placed on the right hand side of the recorder, re-wound and then played.

Among the musical innovations woven into the up-tempo 'Brainville' and 'Transition,' are advanced time signatures coupled with harmonic scales based on Ra's mathematical equations. Not to be missed is the lush elegance within the delicate, if not intricate arrangements heard on 'Possession,' as well as the equally involved 'Sun Song' — both of which take on an air of sophistication in their deceptive simplicity... arguably the most accessible work in the Sun Ra catalog, as well as one of the most thoroughly and repeatedly listenable
