The 4th and last installment of The Nomad Series, titled The Wilderness was released in March. Once the project was finished, the band realized they had songs that havent quite made the four albums that were too good to keep hidden. Extras consists of ten songs that will constitute a full LP in a similar embossed outer sleeve and printed inner to that of Volumes 1 to 4. Exclusively available to the vinyl format is a bonus 12 which contains four stunning live tracks. These will not be available on the equivalent CD box set. The set is completed with a 12 x 12 booklet compiled by the band. All of these come housed in a box with a lift off lid that has room for Volumes 1 to 4 so that the complete series can be kept together as a whole.
Very few bands have lasted so long with their original line-up intact, and fewer still have created as consistently satisfying a body of work as Cowboy Junkies. Albums like The Trinity Session (1988), Black Eyed Man (1992), Miles From Our Home (1998), and Early 21st Century Blues (2005) are just a few of the milestones which chronicle a creative path that has remained impervious to trends.
Cowboy Junkies are now blasting forward with unprecedented determination. The Nomad Series may mark a new and distinct chapter in the band's remarkable history, but it is certainly consistent with their process and vision.
One of the things weve done that has never changed, Margo Timmins says, is weve always made music the way it felt good to us. We never wondered, How will this be received? or Is this whats happening? Weve changed as musicians, but we never changed our attitude and approach. The music has continued to satisfy all of us. Thats why were still together.
From June 2010 to January 2012 Cowboy Junkies wrote, recorded, mixed and released four albums that are collectively called The Nomad Series. They tried to give each album in the series a certain character that distinguished one from the next; Renmin Park (volume 1) was inspired by Michael Timmins 3 month stay in China with his family. Many of the songs were developed around looped street recordings that Michael made while exploring the streets and parks of Jingjiang China. It is an experimental album but it still contains much of the band's signature sound.
"Endlessly creative, while still holding true to the sanguine, country-kissed balladry that has become their forte over the last 25 years, songs like the harrowing A Few Bags of Grain, the windows-down (China National) highway rocker Stranger Here, and the bluesy, trip-hop-kissed "(You've Got to Get) A Good Heart feel both lived in and raw." - James Christopher Monger, allmusic.com
Demons (volume 2) is a collection of songs written by the late, great Vic Chesnutt. Vic was a colleague of the band whose music and songs touched them deeply. His untimely death was a blow to all who knew him and to all who loved his work. This album is a celebration of his life and work and an attempt at helping to spread the gospel of Vic.
"With her smoky alto and expertly
restrained delivery, Margo Timmons turns out to be the perfect conduit for
Chesnutt's tales of loneliness. She can make songs like the slowly drifting
"Betty Lonely" radiate desperation while barely raising her voice above a
murmur." - Rolling Stone
Sing In My Meadow (volume 3) is an attempt at capturing the energy and
spontaneity that infuses the best of the band's (or any) live performance. These
are all original songs, recorded in the course of a few days, infused with
electricity and sprinkled with a touch of good old fashion madness.
"Between the Timmins siblings and the chilling bass of Alan Anton, the Cowboy
Junkies get promisingly loud and whiskey prone, kicking off at Continental
Drift with the running theme of Margos static vocals and some shrill doomsday
harmonica." - David Buchanan, consequenceofsound.net
The Wilderness (volume 4) is the band reaching back to their roots. This album
highlights the folk and roots side of their music, with an emphasis on the
singer and the song.
