Rolling Stone 2015 Readers' Poll: The 10 Best Jam Bands: The Grateful Dead Rated 1st!
The Grateful Dead released an official live concert series called Dick's Picks. These shows have come to be known as some of the best Grateful Dead shows of all time. The Dick's Picks series, which started in 1993, was named for Grateful Dead tape vault archivist Dick Latvala, who selected his favorite shows with the band's approval and oversaw production of the albums. After Latvala's death in 1999, David Lemieux became the Dead's tape archivist and took over responsibility for the Dick's Picks releases. Today this series is being released on vinyl for the first time by Brookvale Records.
After sticking to the '70s for the previous five releases, Dick's Picks Volume 6 marks the first time a complete show from the 1980s gets the nod in this preeminent live album series from The Grateful Dead. The complete three-hour concert is a remarkable snapshot of the Dead's live output in the midst of their third decade on the road. Vol. 6 is also well-known as the first Dead concert attended by Phish frontman Trey Anastasio, an experience which shaped an entirely new generation of music fans. Originally released on CD in 1997, Volume 6 finally arrives as the latest installment in Brookvale Records' critically acclaimed Dick's Picks Vinyl Series.
This stunning 5LP set is pressed on 180g audiophile-grade black vinyl and limited to only 1500 copies worldwide. Each 12" x 12" box set is individually hand-numbered and features artwork, packaging, and mastering all approved by the band. As was the case with the three preceding volumes, Dick's Picks Volume 6 has been painstakingly remastered for vinyl from the original tapes by longtime Bay-area engineer Jeffrey Norman. This classic recording has absolutely never sounded better.
"Dick's Picks Vol. 6 certainly has its place in this incredible series. At the time, Dick Latvala was requested to find something in the early '80s - without the request he may never have left the '70s! He was also looking for a Scarlet Begonias > Fire On the Mountain, since this pairing had yet to be released in the Dick's Picks series. Both are excellent in this show, and they are followed by an equally strong "Estimated Prophet" and "Eyes of the World". The actual process of source to vinyl was a challenge. The original master was a Dolby B cassette, probably the Edsel of tape formats... there are always speed variation and sound issues to deal with. I do think the end result is darn good, and is an important part of the collection." - Jeffrey Norman, Mockingbird Mastering
