The Replacements were simply one of the greatest rock bands ever. Their early
releases were to make them legends and inspire an entire generation to think of
them as cultural and musical heroes.
Tim was released in 1985 and was their first major label release and also the last to feature the original band line-up. The style of the album shows Paul Westerberg's diverse influences which include Roy Orbison, Duane Eddy, Chuck Berry and Nick Lowe.
The album prompted Rolling Stone to write, "while threatening to careen off center, the music always coalesces into the proverbial greater whole," adding that the LP "sounds as if it were made by the last real band in the world."
"Singer-guitarist Paul Westerberg once cited Tim's stylistic bookends to describe both the longevity of the Replacements' influence and their lack of mainstream success. "My style is ultimately both kinds of things," he said. "Sometimes you just love the little acoustic songs, and other times you want to crank the goddamn amp up, and those two parts of me are forever entwined." That cognitive dissonance — the Stonesesque swagger of "Bastards of Young," the unpolished reflection in "Swingin' Party" — became a crucial template for grunge, alternative country and, recently, the noisy introspection of emo." - www.rollingstone.com
