Rolling Stone 100 Best Albums of 2023 - Rated 65/100!
Following the release of 2016's Grammy Award-winning Blue & Lonesome, which featured brilliant versions of blues tracks that helped shape their sound, Hackney Diamonds marks the Stones' first studio album of original material since 2005's A Bigger Bang.
Late drummer Charlie Watts features on two tracks, "Mess It Up" and "Live by the Sword." "Live by the Sword" additionally features bass from former Stones bassist Bill Wyman, while "Sweet Sounds of Heaven" features vocals from Lady Gaga and keys/piano from Stevie Wonder; "Bite My Head Off" features bass from Paul McCartney; and "Get Close" and "Live by the Sword" features piano from Elton John.
Standard LP version includes a gatefold sleeve and heavyweight 180g black vinyl.
At its heart, it's nothing more than the Rolling Stones knocking out some good Rolling Stones songs, which seems like a minor miracle after such a long wait.
If Hackney Diamonds turns out to be the Stones' swan song, the band will have ended its epic 60-year run on a high note. Still, don't count them out.
