Oscar-Winning Duo's First Full-Length in 16 Years on Ivory Vinyl LP!
TAS Rated 3.5/5 Music, 4/5 Sonics in the October 2025 Issue of The Absolute Sound!
The Swell Season is back. After reconvening for a limited number of sold-out shows, including Radio City Music Hall in New York, the duo returns with new music. A studio session that started out as an effort to create a couple of new songs for tour ended up yielding a full-length album, fittingly titled Forward, their first full-length album in 16 years after the huge global success of their Oscar-winning turn in the film Once. Its story and accompanying soundtrack also went on to become an award-winning musical around the world.
The album consists of eight tracks written by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, who take turns singing the lead. Building on the foundation of and with respect to their shared history, they move forward as two equals, supporting and lifting each other up. Accompanied by old band members and produced by Sturla Mio Thorisson, they create a sound both old and new for The Swell Season.
These are strong, emotional songs, so it's a shame there are only eight of them, especially after the long absence. But the Swell Season's meditative material offers respite from a chaotic world in graceful notes of renewal.
