For the follow-up to their 2002 self-titled debut album, frontman Jared Leto wanted to explore an entirely new, far more confessional sonic landscape for 2005's A Beautiful Lie.

The tracks found on the album are a result of painstakingly weeding through 40 songs originally written for the recording. Choosing was a difficult process for the songwriter, Leto, actually having scrapped "The Kill" and "Attack" at one point. Throughout "A Beautiful Lie", the tracks reveal the constant turmoil of life from frustration to ambition to survival.
