Full Moon Fever is the debut solo studio album by Tom Petty, released on April 24, 1989 by MCA Records. The album features an all-star cast of contributors, from George Harrison to Roy Orbison to members of Petty's band, The Heartbreakers. Most of the tracks were composed by Petty and Jeff Lynne of Electric Light Orchestra. The album contains the enduring No. 1 hits "Free Fallin'", "I Won't Back Down" and "Runnin' Down A Dream", plus fan favorites "A Face In The Crowd", "Yer So Bad", "The Apartment Song" and "Alright For Now", and a cover of the Byrds' "I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better".

At the 32nd Annual Grammy Awards, Full Moon Fever was nominated for Album Of The Year, while "Free Fallin'" was nominated for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Male.

In 2019, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Full Moon Fever might have been meant as an off-the-cuff detour, but it turned into a minor masterpiece.
-Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AllMusic.com, 4.5/5 stars
It almost seems impossible to imagine now, but when Petty turned in Full Moon Fever, his record company didn't want to put it out because they didn't hear a single. But the album was an enormous success, with hits like 'I Won't Back Down,' 'Runnin' Down a Dream,' and the majestic L.A. portrait 'Free Fallin',' possibly Petty's most beloved song. Producer Jeff Lynne gave the album a sleek but never slick sound that complemented Petty's sharpest set of songs in a decade.
