The Symphony of the Air, Leopold Stokowski conductor.

The two works on this program were a product of both the man and the moment. The middle 1930's were a bleak period for the American Dream. Formerly a fertile land, over-worked in the boom years, was now eroded, sun-baked and dust covered, farms were left desolate, homeless families were on the road looking for any kind of work, millions in the cities were unemployed. The Plow That Broke The Plains may be called a deeply felt, emotionally unified, tone poem.

"This is one of the closest approaches on record, perhaps the closest, to the remarkable sound Stokowski achieved "live." The remastering, by Doug Sax, is superbly done, easily surpassing the already very good original pressing." -- R.E.G. The Absolute Sound.
