Jazz Supergroup With Renee Rosnes, Cecile McLorin Salvant & More On Vinyl LP!
TAS Rated 4/5 Music, 4.5/5 Sonics in the October 2020 Issue of The Absolute Sound!
Artemis release their self-titled debut album. The supergroup - Renee Rosnes (piano), Melissa Aldana (tenor sax), Anat Cohen (clarinet), Ingrid Jensen (trumpet), Noriko Ueda (bass), Allison Miller (drums) and Cécile McLorin Salvant (vocals) - conjures a powerful, multi-generational, globe-spanning collective voice. The 9-track project features material composed/arranged by the instrumentalist members that unfurls with a dynamic flow, stunningly eclectic yet entirely cohesive.
Artemis is a gorgeously recorded, silky, mainstream acoustic jazz album of complex compositions, varied moods and tempos, and intricate and novel arrangements - notably of Lee Morgan's 'Sidewinder' and Lennon and McCartney's 'The Fool on the Hill' - with sharp solos all around. Vocalist of the moment Cécile McLorin Salvant appears for lovely and lustrous renditions of the 1940s tune 'Cry, Buttercup, Cry' and Stevie Wonder's 'If It's Magic.'
