Christian Ferras, violin; Paul Tortelier, cello; Pierre Barbizet, piano; Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Paul Kletzki. Two of the finest French players in the post-war period, the violinst Christian Ferras and the cellist Paul Tortilier, unite here in a magnificent performance of Brahm's great Concerto for Violin, Cello and Orchestra. Soloists and conductor are in perfect accord, and with superlative playing from the Philharmonia Orchestra this account of the Brahms Double Concerto has rare eloquence and spiritual grandeur. The recording, made in Kingsway Hall, London during June 1962, is beautifully spacious and the problems of balance between two soloists and orchestra are triumphantly solved. The record is completed by a performance of Beethoven's First Violin Sontata in which Ferras is joined by his regular piano partner Pierre Barbizet. The excellent characteristics of the originals stereo recording, first issued in November 1963, have been brought out with great care in the new Testament edition, and the result is a beautifully produced LP, made available in the finest quality 180 gram vinyl pressing.
