Arab-Andalusian Music on Gold CD!
The third original 96 khz high sampling digital recording on M•A, The Splendour of Al-Andalus is truly a splendid collection of Andalusian pieces beautifully performed by members of the Paniagua family of Madrid, Spain. Andalusian music developed from the mid 7th century through the end of the 15th century in the southern area of Spain controlled by Muslims who originally came from North Africa and as far away as Baghad. It is very melodic, very rhythmical and very beautiful! Calamus are Carlos Paniagua, Luis Delgado, Begona Olavide, Rosa Olavide and Eduardo Paniagua. This recording was realized in a beautiful monastery cathedral in Valladolid, Spain. Stereophile Recording of the Month for May of 1995.
"Intimacy informs this disc with every phrase. The quintet plays well together—colloquially, not stiffly. The music never strays far from dance. Begoña Olavide possesses a warm, intense, expressive voice. The first time I heard it—in Stax's room at WCES—I nearly leaped out of my skin when she sang "Insad (God Watch Over the Singer)"; it was as warm and intimate and shocking as a tongue in the ear. The disc is immensely moving, suffused with longing, pain, and a sense of resignation, and yet I can't get enough of it. There's such an exciting sense of shared humanity in this recording that I'm not conscious of the distance of centuries, continents, cultures—I am the singer, I have been the songwriter, I inhabit the notes." - Wes Phillips, Stereophile Recording Of The Month, May 1995
