For 10 years, they labored in the bars of Northern CaliforniaÂ’s East Bay as The Blue Velvets, then The Golliwogs. In the rock and roll deluge, they hardly made a ripple. That changed fast after they moved to Fantasy Records and took the name Creedence Clearwater Revival. In 1968, their debut album with that title became an enormous hit. CreedenceÂ’s no-nonsense style and John FogertyÂ’s excoriating lead vocals captivated fans jaded with second-generation rock bands that were cute, cuddly, or contrived. By the end of the decade, CreedenceÂ’s Bayou Country album with "Proud Mary" had gone platinum and the band was an American institution.
