Early Hours mixes the simplicity and lyricism of folk with occasional hints of jazz swing and the directness of pop to make a very rounded and enjoyable musical experience. This time round Eleanor is working with a bigger band so the arrangements are more complete and richer sounding than on Yola. A little trumpet here, some piano, Hammond organ and fiddle there in the service of some very memorable material. But Eleanors song writing and singing are what this thirteen track set is all about. She has lost none of her talent for melody, observation and expression. She can do sad, reflective and hopeful without sounding forced or tin-pan alley. Her songs sound like the product of personal experience-some of it happy and some of it less so. Her songs come from the heart and performed with sincerity and the lightest of touch, so while she plumbs the emotional depths, the sentiments are never overwrought or saccharine. The album has got plenty of ace songs "Youll Hear Better Songs Than This", "Ill Be Willing" and "Make Mine A Small One" along side nifty cover jobs of Chuck Berrys "Memphis Tennessee" and Bert Janschs "Where Did My Life Go".
