British bandleader John Mayall serves as the foundation of the ever-evolving blues/rock band the Bluesbreakers. Starting in London in 1963, the Bluesbreakers has included some of the most successful rock musicians of the '60s and '70s - Aynsley Dunbar (Jefferson Airplane, Journey, Nils Lofgren), Peter Green (Fleetwood Mac), Mick Taylor (The Rolling Stones).

The recordings made by this incarnation of the Bluesbreakers did not receive a lot of attention when released in 1966; but this release is now considered one of the seminal blues/rock albums of the '60s. It was the first record to feature Clapton performing vocals (Ramblin' On My Mind), and he began to solidify his status as a guitar-great with powerful performances on all tracks.

Clapton and Bruce left the Bluesbreakers after this one album to join Ginger Baker in Cream, and the Bluesbreakers went on to yet another configuration that showed Mayall's uncanny ability to find expert sidemen.

"The blues breakers became one of London's hottest acts as soon as ex-Yardbird Clapton arrived, but that wasn't what he'd bargained for. "He just wanted to play his guitar," Mayall remembered. Except Clapton's solos with the Blues Breakers inspired his cult; this is when CLAPTON IS GOD graffiti first started to appear in London, and this record shows why. Along with the band's expert renderings of Freddie King's "Hideaway" and Robert Johnson's "Ramblin' on My Mind," the LP contains a nutty take on Ray Charles' "What'd I Say," whose long drum solo gave Clapton a preview of what he'd soon experience in Cream." - www.rollingstone.com
