180 Gram Heavy Weight Vinyl! Mesmeric Tales And Soaring Melodies Create An Incredibly Intimate Album!

A Creature I Don’t Know is British singer, songwriter and guitarist Laura Marling’s third album and first for Ribbon Music. Since her emergence onto the London music scene in 2007 Laura Marling has steadily secured her position as one of the most exciting musical talents of her generation. By the age of 21 she has already won a BRIT award and been nominated for the UK Mercury Music prize twice.

Recorded with producer Ethan Johns (who also helmed her acclaimed sophomore album I Speak Because I Can), A Creature I Don’t Know is a boldly accomplished and endlessly impressive album. 10 original compositions of intricate and captivating story-telling, buoyed by Marling’s rich voice, evocative lyrics and the precise, confident instrumentation on every track. Marling’s delivery is pitch perfect, her voice going from delicate whisper to brooding murmur and rousing wail, sometimes all in the very same sentence.

Johns’ production of A Creature I Don’t Know is the perfect showcase for her remarkable gifts, pulling back to give a stark spotlight to her stunning voice before surging forth with a rollicking live band feel. Fans of Marling’s previous recordings will recognize her mesmeric tales and soaring melodies in what is ultimately an incredibly intimate album.

"From her origins in the London folk scene that produced Mumford & Sons to the studied, literate songcraft of her first two albums, Laura Marling has rightly earned a reputation as the real deal, a wise-beyond-her-21-years traditionalist, evoking the legendary Brit-folk voices of Shirley Collins, Sandy Denny, and Linda Thompson. Here she pays homage to Leonard Cohen's "Chelsea Hotel #2" ("Night After Night"), crescendos lustrously ("My Friends"), and sharply references Steinbeck ("Salinas")." - Garret Kamps, SPIN.com, 7/10 Rating

"Laura Marling sings in a clear, expressive voice that swoops birdlike from a dusky croon to a wry sing-speak. She sings most lines forcefully, exerting herself over the full folk accompaniment, then sings-speaks the last line of each stanza-more like an actor than a musician. It's a simple, yet powerful technique, one that adds drama to the song and gives this 21-year-old artist a presence and authority that may belie her age...A Creature I Don't Know is her best album yet-definitely her most musically and lyrically ambitious. She injects her songs with evocative turns of phrase and carefully chosen concrete details, making each sound lived in and immediate." - Stephen M. Deusner, pastemagazine.com
