DSS Notes: All Analog

Can't Slow Down has sold over 20 million copies, had 5 singles hit the Top 10 with "All Night Long (All Night)" and "Hello" hitting number 1! The album also won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1985. With such staggering success and the passing of time you tend to overlook the production, mixing and playing — the sound!

Recorded primarily at Oceanway Recording Studios and produced by Lionel Richie and James Anthony Carmichael, Can't Slow Down features contributions from Steve Lukather, Jeff Porcaro, Greg Phillinganes and several other top studio musicians anchoring the vocals of Lionel. All vocal arrangements are by Lionel.

We had multiple copies of original pressings as guides, each sounded fine, but once we heard the original analog master tapes Chris Bellman was confident he could achieve an amazing cut. The tapes were in great shape, already assembled and sounded fantastic.

Like so many other monumental recordings this album was originally mastered by Bernie Grundman — so the goal was to surpass his original work and create the definitive sounding version of this all-time classic album. We hope you agree we did.

It's natural, open, warm, lush, and beautiful, at least on this pressing. It's so impressive!
