Recorded for Roulette on two consecutive days, April 3 and 4, 1961 in New York, Armstrong and Ellington were joined by fellow musicians Barney Bigard, Trummy Young, Mort Herbert and Danny Barcelona for a total of 17 tracks. Recording Together For the First Time was released in 1961 with 10 tracks followed in 1963 by the companion album, The Great Reunion, which was released with the remaining tracks.

The Ellington band is superb and Louis just blows and sings to your heart's content.

Armstrong on Ellington: "Duke Ellington has always been my man of music, ever since the days of the Cotton Club. In my estimation, there will never be another Duke. It was the thrill of my life to make this album. Long live the Duke of Ellington!"

Ellington on Armstrong: "Louis Armstrong is the living symbol of jazz. My admiration for him as a person and performer goes 'way back. I couldn't be a more enthusiastic listener."
