Pianist Maria Joao Pires performs Impromptus by Franz Schubert for this audiophile recording.
PIres, born in Lisbon, Portugal, performed her first recital at the age of five and was already playing Mozart piano concertos publicly at the age of seven. Two years later she received Portugal's top prize for young musicians. Later she studied with Campos Coelho at the Lisbon Conservatory. She became known internationally in 1970 upon winning the Beethoven Bicentennial Competition in Brussels. Her worldwide fame after a performance in Amsterdam. She had rehearsed the wrong Mozart concerto from the one the orchestra started playing, so she quickly recovered playing the correct concerto from memory. The film of this event was published to YouTube in 2013.
