Stockfisch have found a new way to bring vinyl fans even closer to the original recording. Their DMM lathe cuts the audio into a copper plated steel disc. They normally use this process to create a 14" DMM-Master that is sent to pressing plants for the production of vinyl records.
Their new DMM-Dubplate however, is about the same size as a 12" vinyl record.* This makes it possible to play it on any record player and helps you bypass the loss in sound quality that is caused by the additional steps in the production of records, such as galvanic processes and the pressing of the vinyl.
The DMM-Dubplate avoids issues like pre-echos and crackling noises. The high purity phosphate-copper has very little groove noise and clicking noises are seldom. Only one side of a DMM disc is recordable since the backside is not copper plated. The tracking force of the tonearm can be left as is.
And how does this Dubplate sound? Let's focus on one of the five tracks. Steve Strauss' "Just Like Love" is not only a catchy song interpreted in an outstanding way, but it also demonstrates the impressive superiority of the Dubplate compared to conventional audio-media, which also includes SACDs or streaming services such as Qobuz, even when they are played back using premium equipment such as the Grimm MU1 and converted by the studio-quality converters of the SPL-Mercury. In direct comparison, the playback from the copper groove sounds denser and at the same time more transparent. But above all, more NATURAL. It's an overused phrase but it is true; the singer seems to be standing in person in the room. Some might compare it to seeing a 4K-movie – also impressive but not the same experience. Those who have been working their whole life on improving the sound of their HiFi equipment will experience with the Dubplate the fulfilment of their audiophile dreams.
* The DMM Dubplate has a diameter of 320 mm; so its radius is 10 mm larger than a vinyl record. If you have a tangential tonearm, please check if the tonearm has enough clearance before ordering the Dubplate.
Important Information: The DMM-Dubplate should not be washed with a record-cleaning machine, since it might cause a chemical reaction on the copper surface. In contrast to a vinyl record, there's no mechanical abrasion and no electrostatic charge in the copper groove. After the DMM-Dubplate has been played, it should be placed back in the plastic sleeve together with the white protection sheet, in order to prevent oxidation. Never touch the copper-plated disc with bare hands — use cotton gloves instead.
Please also note: With the DMM-Dubplate, the wear-rate of the diamond-stylus is comparable to when playing a regular vinyl record.
