Raises the performance bar even higher at this highly competitive price point!

The evolution of the ever-popular Blue Point Special, the BPS EVO III raises the performance bar even higher at this highly competitive price point. Its tonal balance is remarkably smooth, exhibiting a fundamental richness and overall warmth without sacrificing musical detail and resolution. Sound stage focus and channel separation are exemplary, as is the cartridge’s ability to maintain a coherent consistency that reproduces music as a perceptual whole.

Chemically coated aluminum cantilever with 0.3mm x 0.7mm elliptical stylus. Ultra low-resonance open generator design and resonance controlled mounting system provides the lowest mechanical impedance. The BPS EVO III is highly compatible with most modern tonearms.

"Sumiko's Blue Point EVO III is an updated version of the firm's popular Blue Point Special (BPS)... The EVO III provided a big helping of moving-coil goodness, yet was refreshingly free of common moving-coil quirks and foibles. Enthusiastically recommended." - The Absolute Sound, April 2004

Good as always

I've been using the BPS on my SOTA Star and Premier FT3 for over a decade. Jerry Raskin's Needle Doctor used to offer a "retip" service with a $100 credit on a replacement cart. For some reason they summarily canceled my order and didn't respond to questions. I'm also a longtime ED shopper but never thought of ordering it from them before. They also offer the "retip" credit, so I went with ED. There's no evidence, or none that I can find, that cart they sent was an inferior re-manufactured unit. I haven't had a chance to compare sounds of different carts in a long time and mostly rely on reviewers. This one sounds great to me, lots of "presence" compared to releases also available digitally e.g. Rachmaninoff Symphonic Dances/Dallas Symphony (which ED stocks last time I looked). Plenty of detail. Tracking has improved so much compared to cartridges of yore that I don't think mistracking is an issue with any decent modern one. It certainly isn't with this one. I like the way the stylus sticks out making cuing easier. It also means I have to be extra careful not to ruin it. One thing I do not like is the absence of a stylus guard of any kind for use while installing it. This should not be difficult to manufacture and should be included with a cartridge at this price level. I recently did a test with one of the Shure test records of the cartridge/arm resonance. I don't know why I never tried this before. I found the resonance of the BPS/Premier to be spot on the ideal 10hz, and the damping on the Premier still works fine after all these years. I won't worry my head about that issue again. I have so far not been tempted to do a trade-in to a more expensive cartridge. I might try a low output version some day but I'm not completely confident switching my Parasound P7's input to "MC" wouldn't introduce audible hum, so I went with what has always worked for me.
