Be Still features the two-time Grammy-nominated trumpeter/composer Dave Douglas and his Quintet with Americana vocalist Aoife O'Donovan on a set of American folk songs and hymns. It is a bold and brilliant blend of jazz quintet, devotional music on classical themes from Sibelius and Ralph Vaughn Williams, etc., and the folk tradition. It is also an intensely personal set for Douglas as it is drawn from a group of hymns his mother had requested for her memorial service. Douglas performed the hymns at the service and then, inspired by his mom, the music and a powerful imperative to go deeper, continued to develop the music and eventually to record it. Douglas and his fellow musicians burn an emotional arc beyond the artifice of lyricism, with direct outbreaks of pain and cries of joy. This is gorgeous, stunning music recorded exquisitely.
Be Still features Douglas' superb quintet of Jon Irabagon, Linda Oh, Matt Miller and Rudy Royston. Also featured is rising star vocalist Aoife O'Donovan, who has performed and recorded with Yo Yo Ma, Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion, Chris Thile and Crooked Still.
From Stereophile:
"The session was recorded, live-to-2-track on 24/96 ProTools, by Joe Ferla, one of the best around, who's laid down much of Douglas' work over the years (including Charms of the Night Sky). Unlike some of the great engineers, Ferla isolates the musicians and puts several microphones around them—a tube Neumann u67 on the singer, a pair of Beyers on the piano, a Coles ribbon mike on the center of the drum kit—though keeping most of them at low levels, balancing them just-so, with almost no EQ on the board."
Each tape is copied directly from the digital master file created by Mark Wilder to a custom-built analog, Sony APR 5003 tape recorder, mounted on custom supports, employing custom wiring and custom AC conditioning. Each tape is recorded, one at a time, to 15ips IEC, 1/4" half-track.
** It is standard practice in all recording studios to keep the tape "tail out". This reduces "pre-echo" and it means that the tape should be placed on the right hand side of the recorder, re-wound and then played.
"I wanted Be Still to be the next release in our new R2R Master Tape Series for three reasons: 1) it was recorded live to 2 track by genius NY engineer Joe Ferla just like in the old days when analog ruled; 2) the music is spectacular; and 3) it's absolute 100% proof that a high res digital recoding, when done right, is reinvented on tape." - Michael Friedman, Premonition Records"Dave Douglas' Be Still is his most sheer-gorgeous album since the 1998 Charms of the Night Sky and one of the best-sounding new recordings that I've heard by anybody in quite a while Â… a splendid album in every way." - Fred Kaplan, Stereophile
"Be Still is brimming with poetic elegance; but it is also adventurous in its graceful articulation of folk forms (jazz is one of them, after all), and possesses a creativity and musical sophistication that is above all, revelatory." - AllMusic
