Rolling Stone 2015 Readers' Poll: The 10 Best Jam Bands: Dave Matthews Band Rated 5th!
Their first studio album in over four years, the Dave Matthews Band album, "Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King", is the follow up to their 2005 release Stand Up, which was their fourth consecutive studio album to enter the Billboard 200 at No. 1. They have been named the top-drawing American band in the world by Billboard Magazine.
While in New Orleans completing the recording of Big Whiskey, DMB contemplated many ideas for the next album cover. Producer Rob Cavallo suggested the band have someone create a drawing. Dave conveyed that he'd draw something and was urged along. What resulted is his most ambitious artwork to date. It's fitting that DMB decided on a special album cover to complement the unique album title.
Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King comes at a pivotal time for the Dave Matthews Band. After grappling with the death of founding saxophonist LeRoi Moore in 2008, the band carried on and completed their first record in four years. The result is a tribute to Moore, featuring his nickname as the album's title as well as many lyrical allusions to him throughout. This record also sees the band returning to their roots, with a sound more reminiscent of their first three releases and a deliberate absence of the glossy sheen that has permeated their work since the turn of the millennium.
