Willie left Nashville and the Nashville Sound foisted on him by his longtime label, RCA, and moved to Austin where he developed a more organic sound to his liking fusing jazz, rock and soul elements with country. When Jerry Wexler heard Willie's new material, he signed him as the first country artist on Atlantic Records. In additional to the original album, this release features a second LP of alternate versions and outtakes from the album sessions, making their first appearance on LP here.
