Hybrid 3-Channel Stereo SACD!
Remastered by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound!
Cut from Original 3-Track Session Tapes!

RCA Living Stereo - the gold standard for top quality orchestral performance and sound!

One of the most sought-after Living Stereos and deservedly so, especially for the "Song of the Nightingale" which is one of Mohr and Layton's finest efforts. The sound is truly wonderful on the Stravinsky too. The original 3-track session tapes were used in mastering for LPs and SACDs.

The JVC XRCD version gets most of it right except the sonic spectrum is so dramatically skewed to the high frequencies that the loud brass instruments sometime sound too penetrating. Prokofiev's transparent orchestration does emphasize the highs, but on this Analogue Productions SACD it all sounds subtly more recessed and perfectly natural because of the increased open airiness.

A Fine Recording of Two Fine Pieces

I was introduced to this album by a gentleman a few years older than me at a "listening party". He played it from his 1958 vinyl copy, and I was so struck by the trumpet work and the themes by Prokofiev, that I looked it up to see if it was still available. As Providence would have it, not only was it still being distributed, Analogue Productions has also released it on SACD, my current preferred format. As a very special bonus, not only does the SACD contain the original stereo mix, the recording was originally recorded in 3 channels, so it also contains a mix of the recording spread across the 3 front channels of your surround stereo setup. And I have to say that the 3 channel mix is even more powerful and sharp sounding than the 2 channel stereo, which is no slouch, even 64 years on! Elusive Disc had this set for the right price, so I went for it, and I've had no issues. Thanks Elusive Disc for the great buy!
