in the spirit: Ethnic Heritage Ensemble tribute to Don Cherry

The spirit gathering seems not so much about Don Cherry's compositions or the different specific directions he took in his career, but about the openness to a wide range of forms to express a spirit of the creative ecstatic. This is yet another superb work by Kahil el-Zabar and the various ensembles he has played with for decades. Here Corey Wilkes (trumpet) and Alex Harding (baritone sax) along with Kahil on drums and persussion are joined by Dwight Trible (vocals) and David Ornette Cherry (Don's son) on keyboards. The spiritual side of jazz that Cherry explored and el'Zabar continues to explore is beautifully recorded and the playing fits with that kind of ecstatic spirit that we can hear in the spiritual musical forms Cherry helped develop.
