2015 Grammy Award Nominee for:
Best Metal Performance - "High Road"
Art is a cyclical beast. The same can easily be said of Grammy Award nominated hard rock juggernaut Mastodon. The groups four members recognize the importance of lifes omnipresent cycles on their sixth full-length album, Once More Round the Sun. The band orbits around themes of loss and rebirth, twirling a sonic spiral of its signature robust riffing, hypnotically haunting soundscapes, triage of dynamic voices, and thundering seismic grooves.
The very title says something slightly different for each member. "Quite literally, Once More 'Round the Sun means a year-in-the-life," explains Dailor. "Lyrically, we were discussing things that happened to us recently, whereas in the past we looked further back for inspiration. It's about 365 days in this band. It was a tough and strange journey. We happened to be in the middle of completing a full rotation musically as everything else was going on."
Mastodon is an American heavy metal band from Atlanta, Georgia, formed in early 2000. Many of their songs feature progressive concepts and unique instrumentation with a mix of clean vocals and harsh screams.
Mastodon has released five studio albums, a live album and accompanying DVD, a compilation of early material and a box set. The band released its debut album Remission in 2002, which garnered significant critical acclaim for its unique sound. Their second release, Leviathan, was based on the famous American novel by Herman Melville, Moby Dick. Three magazines awarded it Album of the Year in 2004: Revolver, Kerrang! and Terrorizer. Mastodon achieved major American commercial success with its 2011 album The Hunter, which debuted at number ten on the Billboard 200 chart.
"Mastodon is the greatest metal band of their generation--no one else comes close." -Rolling Stone
"Many of the tracks on Once More 'Round the Sun dig into the band's seemingly inexhaustible bag of monstrous riffs and wonderfully fractured motifs...Once More 'Round the Sun furthers what Mastodon began on The Hunter: expanding their music past metal's rigid borders -- even with its many subgenres -- toward an integrative hard rock that doesn't leave metal out. The songwriting, playing, and production here are inspired, kinetic, and far more accessible than ever before." -Thom Jurek, allmusic.com
