Otto Klemperer conducting the Phiharmonia Orchestra. Mendelssohn was one of the most gifted musicians of his age. Beginning to compose at the age of eleven he soon showed a degree of precociousness beside which even Mozart's must appear as less amazing. Mendelssohn enchants by an easy flow of graceful, elegantly tailored melody, by the perfection of his form and, in his orchestral works, by his instrumentation which is vivid, colorful and light.
