Acclaimed composer Michael Giacchino helms the music duties for Star Trek Beyond, the third in the Star Trek reboot movie series starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg & Karl Urban. The film also stars Anton Yelchin (as Pavel Chekov) who tragically lost his life in a freak accident following the completion of the film.
"The score opens with Logo And Prosper and its only naturally that it starts with Giacchinos main Star Trek theme. It still sounds good to me. As a nice bonus theres a hint of the classic Star Trek theme as well, just a couple of notes, but thatll do. Theres even more than a hint in Star Trek Main Theme, but thats no surprise. Thank Your Lucky Star Date is not that different from the opening theme. The main Star Trek theme is still in use and theres some kind of waltz in the end. Its very hopeful sounding music and for me, Star Trek has been all about hope. Lets hope for some brand new music now and Night On The Yorktown certainly has that. The opening sounds like the beginning of a romantic story, but what happens next is the best part. Its more romance, but its bigger and bolder with choirs. Soaring up to the sky with this one. My favourite cue so far. Its not really the Star Trek I know, but its beautiful music.
"Time to get serious and I think something is about to happen with The Dance Of The Nebula. The music feels more tense. Theres percussion here that warns about the upcoming storm. I like the ending. Its all doom and gloom at this point, but with a very nice complex orchestra backing it up. Finally some action with A Swarm Reception and this is different than previous Star Trek scores in the reboot series. The action music sometimes feels like the swashbuckling action music of the 50s, Im thinking about the part 40-50 seconds in. I love that. It felt a bit different than Giacchinos usual action output. Loving this. Yeah Giacchino is really using the orchestra here. The action music feels more dramatic than ever. Some would say its overdoing it, but I like the fact that it feels a bit over the top. Giacchino usually dont do this, but I felt the signs were there with Jupiter Ascending. Glad hes taking it to heart. This is fun..." - soundtrackgeek.com
