"In the Wind" was so successful that when it hit #1 on the Billboard album charts, it caused their two previous albums to re-enter the Top 10 as well. The album was released in December 1963, a few months before the arrival of the Beatles heralded the British Invasion. At this point in musical history the folk music revival was in full bloom.
Their third recording was one of the group's stronger outings... in particular, this record was essential to boosting the profile of Bob Dylan. The lead-off single of Dylan's "Blowin' In the Wind" became world famous when it sold a phenomenal 300,000 copies in the first week of release. On July 13, 1963 it reached number two on the Billboard pop chart with sales exceeding one million copies. At the Grammy Awards of 1964, their recording of "Blowin' In the Wind" won the Best Folk Recording and Best Performance by a Vocal Group. Other highlights include their gorgeous interpretation of Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" as well as spirituals, a lullaby, and even a Civil War ballad.
The vocals on this album are sublime, emotional, beautiful and dazzling. As always Paul and Peter's guitar work is extraordinary (as is the bass work of Edgar deHaas). The songs they chose to record for this album are sung with conviction, belief and testimony. When this LP reached No. 1 in 1963 it was only weeks after John F. Kennedy's assassination, the folk movement was in full swing... and something was definitely in the air - or In the Wind!
