East Side Story was produced in 1981 for A&M Records by Elvis Costello and Roger Bechirian (with help from Dave Edmunds and Neill King on the opening track). From the "blue-eyed soul" of Tempted to the fun-loving rockabilly of Messed Around, East Side Story has lots of style without the attitude. With East Side Story, critics began to compare the writing team of Difford and Tilbrook to Lennon and McCartney (this you can judge for yourself with the first time lyrics included in the MoFi version).

This was Squeeze’s US breakthrough album and Tempted was the 1st US chart single. In Britain, the album reached the Top 20 with the song Labelled With Love a #4 British hit. As the second title to be remastered using GAIN 2 System, East Side Story is warmer while retaining musical detail. For the 1st time, all the songs share a sonic consistency. Rounder and fuller, with more depth, this new wave/pop has enough improved sonic accessibility to make the ‘80s seem fresh again.
